The Daily Buddhism was started in early 2007 to bring simple Buddhist thoughts to your email box every day. One of the hardest parts of being a Buddhist is keep in the right mindset. Right Mindfulness has always been the hardest thing for me, and I suspect that it’s tough for most of us in this busy world. By getting something in our mail every day, it helps keep our mind grounded where it should be. Generally speaking, there are five emails a week, but occasionally I do get busy and miss a day.
The daily emails are short, simple ideas that will hopefully give you something to think about on your coffee break or lunch hour. If you are at home, maybe you can meditate on the ideas presented. Either way, it’s a big help for your daily mindfulness. Even if you don’t keep up with it on a daily basis, since it arrives in your email, you can always save it and catch up later.
The History of Daily Buddhism
January 2007 - Religion scholar Brian Schell started a column “The Daily Enlightenment” on an Internet message forum. It had a Buddhist quote or classic story every day. The forum is now long gone, but the idea remained.
April 2007 - The Daily Buddhism mailing list began. This continued with the koans and inspirational sayings from the former message boards, and gained in popularity until Brian moved to Japan for a half-year in late August 2007.
February 2008 - The Daily Buddhism was reborn in a big way. Brian returned from Japan and expanded on the old mailing list by adding an entire “Basic Buddhism Course” covering all the basics of what Buddhism is all about. This happens five time a week on the mailing list as well as on the dailybuddhism.com website and weekly on the audio show. As the reader and listener numbers grew, more and more readers sent in questions and ideas for topics, and the show grew vastly larger, supporting and being supported by the readers. Questions and comments are always welcome at dailybuddhism@gmail.com
September 2008 - The Daily Buddhism added a call-in number to make the show far more interactive than it had been. Do you have a question or comment on Buddhism, applying Buddhist ideas to your life, or something inspirational to talk about? Call in NOW at 937-660-4949 anytime, 24 hours a day, and your message could be on next week’s show!
